Another former big-box retailer is getting a face-lift for an unexpected new use

Publix Super Markets Inc. continues to expand its reach in the Tar Heel State.
The Florida-based grocer says its newest store in the greater Charlotte region will open at 7 a.m. on March 14.
The 49,000-square-foot store is located in the Cambridge Village shopping center in Denver. That mixed-use development is under construction off N.C. Highway 73.
Expect a traditional Publix store, complete with a full-service deli offering grab-and-go options or heat-and-serve items.
The bakery offers an assortment of cakes, cookies and pies, with bread and rolls made fresh daily.
There also will be a full-service meat and seafood department, produce department with organic and conventional offerings as well as a pharmacy.
The Denver store gives Publix 22 stores in the Charlotte region, with two others under construction.
That includes a long-awaited store in Charlotte’s Cotswold neighborhood, slated to open in the second quarter.
The supermarket chain had no stores in the region until mid-2012. Its first N.C. store opened in Ballantyne in February 2014.
The grocer has created 3,500 jobs across the state since then. It has 40-plus stores.
It is continuing to look for sites in the Charlotte market and across the state.
